Layton Material Sciences Lab

The laboratory space is used by PhD and Master students for experiments involving organic materials. The new labs have copious amounts of daylight and views to the outside and are designed as a neutral background for detailed and minute material studies.

Windows that have been covered up for years are exposed for copious amounts of natural daylight. Heavy coordination with mechanical hoods and HVAC systems, abundant electrical were a focal point for this design. The low ceilings were removed and now the rooms open up to the wonderful structure and beautiful volume of space above.

Layton, formerly HEDCO known as β€œThe Experiment Station,” was built in 1938. The building is shared by the Civil Engineering Department and Materials Science and Engineering. The building has a gorgeous industrial feel with beautiful steel trusses, original wood deck and maintains the feel of being a research center despite years of remodels.
