Rusty Box

On an empty lot, down a mid block alley in downtown Salt Lake City, Sausage and Studio Long Playing designed and built an infill house.

The design Process included analyzing the existing structures for proportions, scales, heights, setbacks and more. The south orientation was fortunate for a passive heating strategy, and a naturally day lit house that in the winter is soaked with sun rays.

Although the house is very open with large apertures, the use of landscape and natural fence create a very private house. The house is a modern version of the existing houses in the alley, a nod to the proportions of the front porches in the form of a exterior patio and a protruding mass at the main entry. The house is positioned so that a smaller footprint neighbors the cottages next door, whereas the larger mass connects to the larger houses to the west.
