SLCC Fashion Institute
Client: Salt Lake Community College
Size & Scope: 12,000 sf remodel of the existing South High Building at SLCC Center for Arts and Media Campus
Completion: 2023
The new Fashion Institute focuses on an environment that fosters and intensifies new prospects through a highly collaborative and functional space. The remodel built upon experiences from faculty and students in the fashion program and encourages a connected and creative learning environment. Rooms include instruction areas, individual production areas, storage, sinks and functions required to fulfill projects. Production labs have consistent, yet flexible, arrangements so different classes may use them interchangeably.
The main corridor from which all rooms stem is akin to a runway. Adjustable display cases line the corridor and show off the wonderful work created by students, from the milliners to the dress makers. This corridor will be more than circulation, it will be a place for students to mingle and guests to admire the student work.
General aesthetics include a neutral background to adequately accentuate the expressive nature of the work produced. Spaces will dissolve to the background rather than compete with the amazing student constructions. The creators and their work will be the foreground - the color, the texture, the focal point of the department. Simple finishes are specified: felt for acoustics and tack-able surfaces, white board paint for large creative canvases, and flooring that is easy to clean. A hint of an industrial flare will be present with newly exposed beautiful concrete beams.
Today, the Fashion Institute has a wonderful program for students who have an interest in the world of fashion; its a community of acceptance for creative individuals in fashion to express themselves; a diverse group of advisors, staff and students who have a multitude of different perspectives on the fashion industry.
