SLCC Mock Surgery
Client: Salt Lake Community College
Size & Scope: 3,000 SF Remodel of lab space into surge tech classroom
Completion: 2023
The new Surgical Technology facility at the Jordan Health Sciences Center was a remodel of existing lab spaces all cut up into small pods. The users initial ideas included an “L shaped” configuration which was at odds with their goal of clear visibility to every station. In early programming we developed with them a large rectangular space to meet their needs for adaptability and faulty observation from every point in the room. This flexibility ensures that the facility remains future-proof, ready to integrate new technologies and approaches as the healthcare field evolves.
Thoughtfully designed to simulate the high-stakes world of surgical suites, the facility immerses students in an environment that mirrors the demands of modern operating rooms. The architecture emphasizes realism and functionality, with cutting-edge surgical spaces that replicate professional-grade settings. An open classroom with many stations provide faculty with the ability to guide and evaluate students discreetly, ensuring uninterrupted focus on the tasks at hand, but learning through observation.
The project consisted of a dedicated mock surgical room, scrub in stations and the large hands on instructional room, storage and spaces for sterilizing where carefully configured with the user group. We provided storefront from the hallways to promote curiosity and advertise this exciting discipline.
